  • Originally the dinosaurs where not going to speak at all and the film was going to be a silent, slightly less kid-oriented, animated documentary with narration. At the last minute the studio hastily hired actors to voice the dinosaurs after the animation had been rendered which is why the dinosaur’s mouths don’t move when they speak and when they do the lip synching is off. After the film was released it was panned by critics with the main criticism being the awkward voice-overs.
  • : That’s right, Tiny Arms!

: Seriously, what’s up with those little, baby hands? I mean, look at him he’s so cute! I’m sorry, seriously, I mean, what’s up with that?

What Parents Need To Know

Parents need to know that Walking with Dinosaurs: The Movie is a fictionalized account of a prehistoric herbivore’s life with a few scary parts. Instead of a documentary with narration, the ultra-realistic computer-generated production is more Ice Age than Jurassic Park with a plucky underdog protagonist . There is predator-prey violence that disfigures and kills dinosaurs that could be intensified by the 3D. Expect a romantic subplot that may turn off younger viewers. Language includes scatological references to dinosaur poop and a few insults, but it also includes clear references to the names of every prehistoric animal featured in the movie.

Is It Any Good

Audiences expecting a big-budget dinosaur documentary with extra realistic visuals will be somewhat disappointed. This isn’t a narrated documentary like most BBC Earth productions or the original Walking with Dinosaurs, which featured the voice of Kenneth Branagh. This is basically Ice Age meets The Lion King via The Land Before Time — but with amazing, digitally created landscapes and creatures to recreate the the fauna and flora of 75 million years ago. The scatological humor , the animal “instalove,” the underdog who saves the day — it’s all there, including a romantic subplot so strong the accompanying music was Barry White’s “I’m Gonna Love You A Little Bit More, Baby”!

Speaking of White, the eclectic soundtrack is really quite memorable, including Fleetwood Mac , Matisyahu , and Lord Huron playing during key scenes. It’s all a bit unexpected and confusing, even for kids, who are probably hoping for the 3D dinosaur to stop mooning over the girl from the other herd. Still, viewers will revel in the immersive experience the 3D visuals offer and appreciate honing their skills at naming various dinosaurs. Plus, there’s Karl Urban in two scenes. Budding paleontologists may want more, so check out the movie’s site which offers even more details about the dinosaurs of that period.

What Is Walking With Dinosaurs About

Walking With Dinosaurs s01 Ep01 New Blood

The film Walking with Dinosaurs begins by following Zack, a palaeontologist, as he takes his niece and nephew on an expedition to find new dinosaur fossils. Instead they find a talking bird, Alex, who tells the three explorers a story that took place over 70 million years ago when dinosaurs still walked the Earth.

The film has been praised for its accuracy in portraying recent paleontological discoveries, although now, more than five years later, some aspects may be outdated. However the main aim of the film is not to educate. It is primarily intended as ‘mainstream entertainment’ its director Neil Nightingale told Variety.

The main characters are brought to life via voiceovers by Romeo + Juliet‘s John Leguizamo, Ed‘s Justin Long, The Good Place‘s Tiya Sircar, and Skyler Stone of Comedy Central’s 2005 series Con.

The TV series of the same name as the film was created by Tim Haines, who also worked on Walking with Monsters, Walking with Beasts and Primeval. The BBC documentary miniseries used Professor Michael J. Benton from the University of Bristol as a scientific consultant to ensure palaeological accuracy, and had an original soundtrack composed by Ben Bartlett. The series was met with widespread critical acclaim and led to a spin-off book and a live theatrical show.

Pilot Episode And Funding

Walking with DinosaursCetiosaurusCetiosaurus

The BBC liked the concept of Walking with Dinosaurs but were nervous whether a series of its scale was actually achievable. After also pitching the idea to BBC Worldwide, Haines was granted £100,000 to produce a short pilot episode. In the spring of 1997, Haines, accompanied by a single cameraman, traveled to a national park near Paphos in Cyprus to shoot footage for the pilot. Milne then gathered a small team to produce models and animations. The resulting proof-of-concept pilot, finished by the summer of 1997, was six minutes long. The only consultant so far brought in for the project was the palaeontologist David Martill, who offered his services on the pilot for free if he could then stay on as a consultant should the pilot succeed and a series be made.

There was already considerable interest in the series by the time the pilot was shown owing to the trailer and stills produced by Framestore. Jana Bennett also championed the idea of the series to both Michael Jackson, controller of BBC One, and Mike Quattrone of the Discovery Channel. The pilot was then enough to persuade the BBC, BBC Worldwide, and the Discovery Channel to fund the production of Walking with Dinosaurs. Approximately third of the Walking with Dinosaurs budget came from BBC One, a third from the Discovery Channel, and a third from BBC Worldwide. There were also major investments from TV Asahi in Japan and ProSieben in Germany.

Television And Popular Culture

Walking with Dinosaurs was recognised by several commentators as marking a watershed in television imagery and a scientifically and technologically significant benchmark in television history.Walking with Dinosaurs is often credited for inspiring modern interest in the distant geological past. The success of Walking with Dinosaurs led to the inception of an entirely new genre of documentaries that like Walking with Dinosaurs also recreated past life with computer graphics and were envisioned in the style of nature documentaries.

The success of the two special episodes The Giant Claw and Land of Giants led to the creation of the three-part miniseries Sea Monsters , once again starring Marven traveling back to prehistoric times, this time exploring the “seven deadliest seas of all time”.

What Is The Movie About

Is

Walking with Dinosaurs is an educational family film that was produced by BBC Earth and named after their 1999 award-winning TV documentary series. Unlike the documentary, the movie is fully computer animated and voiced-over by actors. Although the movie did not become a box-office hit, it is widely applauded for its paleontological accuracy, referencing the latest discoveries including the existence of feathered dinosaurs and how dinosaurs lived in herd preyed on each other.

The background scenes were filmed in Alaska and New Zealand.

Walking With Dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3d

In 2014, a shortened 45-minute version of Walking With Dinosaurs was released in 3D theaters across the U.S.A. Unlike the movie, this documentary is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch in a style similar to that of the TV series, and removes the character names and dialogue. Unlike the series though, Prehistoric Planet 3D has a “profile” appear whenever a new prehistoric animal species shows up this profile shows the animal’s name and diet. The Gorgosaurus that appeared in the movie are referred to as Nanuqsaurus this is probably because other than a few possible indeterminate remains, Gorgosaurus is not known from Alaska, while Nanuqsaurus is.
