“What they’ve done … is mixed up the dinosaurs as kind of like an alphabet soup of dinosaurs all dumped into a dish, add a little bit of action, stir it up and you have a movie,” Dr. David Burnham, a paleontologist at the University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, told ABC News. “Well, of course they didn’t all live at the same time, they all didn’t live in the same place.”
Burnham said this presents a teaching opportunity to educate the public about the giant creatures that went extinct millions of years ago.
“People I interact with, students at the university, volunteers in my program, they come in with all these questions and a lot of them have seen these movies, and so it’s my chance to teach them the scientific details,” he said. “To say, ‘Oh, no, they wouldn’t have lived together.”Oh, no. This one is from Mongolia. It’s not from North America.'”
The first ‘Jurassic Park’ movie
Arguably, the three most infamous types of dinosaurs featured in the very first “Jurassic Park”movie are a Triceratops, a Tyrannosaurus rex and velociraptors.
However, not all three would have been living at the same time.
“Two of them would — there’s no question the Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus bumped into each other,” Dr. Paul Sereno, a paleontologist at the University of Chicago, told ABC News. “They both lived in North America, and they lived to the very end . They are some of the last of the dinosaurs alive.”
Jurassic World Dominion Features New And Returning Dinosaurs
Jurassic World: Dominion features one of the most impressive rosters of dinosaurs in any Jurassic movie to date, and many of them are new to the franchise. Behemoths like Dreadnoughtus and Giganotosaurus pushed the size of on-screen dinos in the franchise to new limits. The introduction of the Pyroraptor and Atrociraptor meant Owen’s Velociraptors could fully be positioned as lovable, albeit misunderstood and very much still carnivorous, protagonists. Then of course there were visually striking additions, such as the long-beaked plane-fighting Quetzalcoatlus and clawed Therizinosaurus, that ensure Dominion will be distinct in the franchise for something other than its mixed reception on release.
It wasn’t only new dinosaurs though. Jurassic World: Dominion is the final movie in the Jurassic World trilogy, a fact it attempted to celebrate by reintroducing a score of characters, and dinosaurs, from the first Jurassic Park in 1993. Alongside Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler , fan-favorite dinosaurs from Isla Nubar’s ill-fated first park, such as the Dilophosaur and Triceratops, are back in Jurassic World: Dominion. So are many of Jurassic World’s own established mainstays, like the aquatic Mosasaurus. And the two dinosaurs that stole the show in Jurassic Park are back for Jurassic World: Dominion despite nearly three decades passing, it’s still the T-Rex and Velociraptor competing for the title of audience’s most loved prehistoric predator.
Which Dinosaurs Returned In Jurassic World Dominion
Several of the dinosaurs which showed up in Dominion have already played roles in previous Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies. So, while many of Jurassic World 3‘s prehistoric beasts are new to the franchise, audiences will certainly recognize quite a few of the dinosaurs featured in the movie. Here are those dinosaurs:

I imagine that at this point he is more present than ever and probably cherishes, is thankful for and appreciates every moment that comes around, Goldblum says. He wants to use his resources and energies to leave behind something as substantial as possible and manage his stewardship on this planet and kind of move the needle as much as he can.

Dinosaurs In Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park, later known as Jurassic World, is an American science fictionadventuremedia franchise. It focuses on the cloning of dinosaurs through ancient DNA, extracted from mosquitoes that have been fossilized in amber. The franchise explores the ethics of cloning and genetic engineering, and the morals behind de-extinction.
The franchise began in 1990, with the release of Michael Crichton‘s novel Jurassic Park. A film adaptation, also titled Jurassic Park, was directed by Steven Spielberg and was released in 1993. Crichton then wrote a sequel novel, The Lost World , and Spielberg directed its film adaptation, The Lost World: Jurassic Park . Subsequent films have been released, including Jurassic Park III in 2001, completing the original trilogy of films. A fourth installment, Jurassic World, was released in 2015, marking the beginning of a new trilogy. Its sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was released in 2018. A sixth film, Jurassic World Dominion, released in 2022, marks the conclusion of the second trilogy. Two Jurassic World short films have also been released: Battle at Big Rock and a Jurassic World Dominion prologue .

Lack of feathers and color
One criticism of the series is that there has not been a lot of portrayal of varied dinosaurs, such as feathered dinosaurs.
Burnham pointed out that the series is a work of science fiction, not a documentary, but he acknowledges that the portrayals of dinosaurs are likely outdated due to our preconceived notions.
“‘Jurassic Park’ has been slow in adopting a feather model,” he said. “I just think it takes time to break a paradigm. We’ve shown dinosaurs as only reptiles for a long time, so I think we’ve been slow to come around.”
Similarly, new research has shown real dinosaurs were far more colorful than they’ve been portrayed in the series. Dinosaurs were likely a rainbow of colors rather than the neutral earth tones shown in the movies.
Serano thinks this is likely due to the colors people are familiar with of the largest animals currently living on the planet, such as elephants.
“I believe that these dull colors are based on what is known to us, most widely pachyderms,” he said. “We go to the zoo, you see an elephant, you see a rhinoceros, you see a hippo and they are pretty dull colored animals in general. And so it’s based on our knowledge of the most common, large animals that we are familiar with.”
And while many of these dinosaurs may never have occupied the same era, the same time period or even the same location, their appearance together on the silver screen may be a perfect chance to bone up on the taxonomy of the giant animals.
Did Jurassic World Dominion Have Hybrid Dinosaurs
The Jurassic World movies introduced the concept of hybrid dinosaurs such as the Indominus Rex, the Indoraptor, and the Scorpios Rex, who were the villains of the first two Jurassic World movies and of Netflix’s Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. However, Jurassic World Dominion has no hybrid creatures. Instead, the film focuses on the numerous species of dinosaurs that really existed . Along with seeing familiar dinos, Jurassic World Dominion spotlights all-new prehistoric beasts, including a couple that were only relatively recently discovered by real-world paleontologists.

Velociraptor: The Group Project Finisher
What would dinosaur films be without a velociraptor? Its a franchise icon in the Jurassic universe alongside the T-rex, leaving a trail of bloody body counts in its wake. In reality though, raptors were most likely feathered and werent bigger than turkeys. They probably hunted solo instead of swarming preys in packs, no matter what Alan Grant led you to believe.
This isnt far off the mark from your hapless group mates who are always pulling all-nighters so everyone else doesnt fail the capstone project. Once grades are out and its all smiles, no one seems to remember this was a lone endeavour of an over-caffeinated yet efficient genius.

Time Will Tell If Jurassic Is Forever
Trevorrow introduces new characters like cargo pilot Kayla Watts and a dino-filled Earth that very covertly set the stage for the future, though what comes next after “Dominion” is anyones guess.
Billions and billions of years from now, I predict, yes, there will be Jurassic stories being told and consumed with lots of popcorn or whatever they eat at that point. Tang, probably, Goldblum quips.
It might be dinosaurs watching movies about the extinct humans that they brought back to put into an amusement park, jokes Pratt, who sees the potential for a Jurassic cinematic universe. When I was 13 years old watching these guys , before I ever even knew I would be an actor, they were cemented in my mind as icons. I love the idea that there’s a kid who’s going to go watch this this summer and they grow up and get to be a part of this.

In fact, what is portrayed as a velociraptor in the film, and in the original book by Michael Crichton, is not a velociraptor.
“The name ‘velociraptor’ at the time Michael Crichton wrote the book had been expanded to encompass animals that we now no longer call velociraptor,” Dr. Bhart-Anjan Bhullar, an assistant professor of earth & planetary sciences at Yale University, told ABC News. “The animal that Crichton was writing about — the animal depicted in the first ‘Jurassic Park’ — that animal is an animal that we now named Deinonychus.”
Deinonychus also lived in the western U.S. but during the early Cretaceous period, between 120 and 110 million years ago
New dinosaurs introduced
“Jurassic World Dominion” is introducing dinosaur species not seen in the franchise before, including the Atrociraptor, the Giganotosaurus and the Microceratus.
However, none of them would have existed in the same period or — if they did exist at the same time — in the same location.
“The Atrociraptor existed at the end of the time of dinosaurs in North America,” Bhullar said, during the late Cretaceous Period. “Meanwhile the Giganotosaurus existed 20 to 30 million years earlier.”
In a five-minute prologue to “Jurassic World Dominion” that was released in 2021, the Giganotosaurus and the Tyrannosaurs battle each other — something that would never have occurred.
Also appearing in “Jurassic World Dominion” is a Dilophosaurus, which has not been seen since the first “Jurassic Park” movie.

Quetzalcoatlus: The Exchange Student
The largest flying animal ever known finally lands itself in the airspace of Jurassic World: Dominion. With wings packed with dense muscle fibres, this giraffe-sized pterosaur was a well-travelled animal that could fly 16,000 kilometres non-stop after launching itself on air, and had the metabolism to power its wayfaring tendencies.
Theyre very much similar to exchange students spending one or two semesters abroad, never putting their feet down for too long in one place. Global nomad is something youll see in , along with proficiency in multiple languages. Theyll keep soaring, eventually securing a gig at the United Nations, and you can never seem to catch up.

Many dinosaurs in the movies existed millions of years apart in real life.
The final installment in the “Jurassic Park” series hits theaters Thursday, 29 years after the first movie stomped on the big screen.
The films show a world in which several dinosaurs, including Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Parasaurolophus, Compsognathus and Mosasaurus, have been resurrected and wander freely around an island.
But experts said most of the dinosaurs shown in the movies didn’t coexist during the same timeframe. In fact, they were separated by millions of years. What’s more, many didn’t even live in the same area.

Tyrannosaurus Rex: The Future Prime Minister
Weve saved the best for the last. The slow thud of ominous footsteps and terrifying roar by the mighty T-Rex in Jurassic Park is a cinematic masterpiece that cemented the dinosaurs status as a cultural phenomenon. Known as Rexy by fans, she is the undisputed queen of the fictional Isla Nublar island, and has emerged triumphant in every single film in the series.

Critics have hailed Jurassic World: Dominion as a celebration of strong female lead, but its true feminist icon is Rexy. You see a Rexy everywhere on campus. She is the Tracy Flick-like poster girl who heads the students union, moderates the all-male panel because she can, and is invited as a speaker at the parliament.
Ellie Sattlers famous quote from the first film comes to mind: Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the Earth. At the top of the food chain is Rexy ambitious, determined, and fearless. Shell run for office in no time.
Why Does Dominions Giganotosaurus Look Like Acrocanthosaurus

While some of us dino geeks went to great lengths to explain why our new Jurassic World dino should be called Acrocanthosaurus, seemingly, the plan was for it to be Giga all along. Palaeontologist Steve Brusatte, who acted as Dominions dinosaur consultant, weighed in on the subject.
With that in mind, Dominions creative team slapped some spikier ornamentation on the Giga to make it look less rexy. The visual similarities to Acrocanthosaurus, as it turns out, were entirely coincidental.

The release of Jurassic World: Dominion marked an epic conclusion to nearly three decades of the saga of resurrected dinosaurs. The film franchise transformed our popular imagination of the prehistoric world, and made a fringe field of study like palaeontology seem like the coolest job on the planet.
Much has evolved in the field since Jurassic Park made its debut in 1993. Scientists now know more about the giant lizards that once roamed the Earth than they ever did before. From their discovery, weve also learned that dinosaurs have a lot more in common with students than you think: they are smart, adaptable, and have unique individual traits that made the Mesozoic Era all the more colourful.
