Ankylosaurus Facts For Kids Students And Adults
Ankylosaurus was a big beast, albeit not as big as the massive sauropods like Apatosaurus and Diplodocus. It was rather lengthy and broad, growing to 1.7 meters in height but nearly as broad as it was tall, if not more so.
In 1906, the Hell Creek Formation, a well-known dinosaur hotspot in Montana, USA, yielded the first Ankylosaurus. Barnum Brown, a well-known paleontologist, led an expedition that discovered the incomplete specimen.
Ankylosaurus was initially described by Brown in 1908. Ankylosaurus magniventris, which means fused lizard with huge belly, was the species name he gave to the specimen.

Origin Of Aquatic Or Marine Dinosaurs
According to scientific and historical data, it is established that these marine reptiles began their life in the Triassic period, which means that it was more than two hundred million years ago The largest known data is the long-necked Plesiosaur, however, later it was learned that this was not the case, but that this was the counterpart of the Loch Ness monster.
These include the ichthyosaurs, which are also called fish lizards. At the time that the great Permian extinction occurred, much of the marine life was lost as it was known until then, so that later new life unknown at that time arrived, among which is the already mentioned, the ichthyosaur, who were the first.
The latter could measure at least thirty-two inches and at most about seventy-two.

Nasutoceratops Sinoceratops And Triceratops
Nasutoceratops, Sinoceratops, and Triceratops comprise the herd that’s spooked by Dinosaur Protection Group members Claire, Zia , and Franklin as they make a run for it after breaking a baby Nasutoceratops out of captivity and away from poachers towards the beginning of the movie. The baby is then encountered by Dr. Ellie Sattler and Dr. Alan Grant as it’s transported to Biosyn’s dinosaur sanctuary in Italy.
The First Triassic Period
This is a time when the climate is relatively dry and hot and especially without polar ice as it is today. This is also the environment where dinosaurs first evolved. With this dry climate, some reptiles have heat-resistant skin, such as the skin of some mammals “Therapsids”, some flying lizards like Pterodactyl, Pteranodon…others Coelophysis that have “hollow form”, Plateosaurus.

Aquatic Or Marine Dinosaurs
Speaking on a scientific level of aquatic dinosaurs is considered somewhat inaccurate, this is because true dinosaurs only lived on land. But not only this, but you can see a structure on the hip that these marine animals did not have.
In addition to that, it can be established that the dinosaurs were part of the Archosaurs that were on planet earth in the Mesozoic era, so this does not match either to be able to call them marine dinosaurs.
If you look at marine life in the years when the dinosaurs existed, it was invaded by marine reptiles which were large, so much so that they could currently swallow a great white shark in one bite. These were considered predators that were at the top of the food chain.
Why Dinosaurs Extinction
There are many reasons to think that dinosaurs are extinct. Extinction dinosaur is still a mystery and controversial for many scientists. They came up with different theories.
Some scientists believe that dinosaurs died because temperatures on Earth were too hot or too cold for them.
Others believe that an asteroid has fallen to earth. The falling meteorites can create dust and block sunlight. Plants will stop growing and lead to food-eating dinosaurs that will die from lack of food. And they become prey to other dinosaur meat eaters.
Other scientists maintain that dinosaurs can turn into modern birds like ostriches today.

Most Popular Types Of Dinosaurs That Roamed The Earth
Dinosaurs have not walked the earth for millions of years. They roamed our planet even before the existence of man. However, these prehistoric giants are fairly famous today. From blockbuster movies to written fiction and even cartoons, dinosaurs are everywhere!
Surely, it is safe to assume that the human race may not have crossed paths with the dinosaurs, but we love and admire them all the same. Learning about them is not only fun, but it can be very fascinating as well!
It is mind-boggling to think that while humans have existed on the Earth for about 66 million years, the reign of dinosaurs lasted for around 165 MILLION YEARS! These majestic beasts went extinct some 67 million years ago.
The cause of their mass extinction is highly debated. Some scientists believe that the planet was hit by a major asteroid that eventually led to the extinction of dinosaurs.
Others have reasons to think that it was a massive bout of volcanism that wiped dinosaurs right off the face of the Earth. Both these scenarios must have choked the skies with dirt and debris, cutting off the Earths supply of sunlight.

This, in turn, caused a massive disruption throughout the food chain and ultimately the poor big fellows starved to extinction.
How Dinosaurs Got Their Name
The term was coined in 1842 by English biologist Sir Richard Owen. The name dinosaur literally means terrible lizards, which we can safely say is a pretty fair description . It comes from two Greek words: deinos, a name that means terrible, and saurus, which means lizard.
As for the individual species, they were named in different ways. Often, dinosaurs are named for a distinctive characteristic. Baryonyx means heavy claw. Corythosaurus means helmet lizard. Tyrannosaurus means tyrant lizard you get the point. Other times, theyre named after the place where the first fossil was found, like Albertasaurus .
Before we start looking into individual species and their names, there are a few other Greek roots that can help you better understand dinosaur names.
- Draco: from Rakon means Dragon
- Hippos: from Hippos means Horse
- Hydro: from Hydro means Water
- Ortho: from Orthos means Straight, Right, or Upright
- Macro: from Makros means Large
- Micro: from Mikros means Small
- Mega: from Megas means Huge
- Morph: from Morph means Shape
- Poly: from Polys means Many.
Now that weve got the boring stuff out of the way, lets finally look at some dinosaurs.

The History Of Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs are very similar to many of todays reptiles and birds. Like all animals, dinosaurs belong to the kingdom Animalia. This Kingdom includes humans, other mammals, birds, fish, bugs, reptiles, and many more.
They are not mammals, but they are closely related to birds and reptiles. They fall outside of the class Reptilia, but are considered to be reptiles
In fact, dinosaurs used to be categorized in the phylum Chordata which includes reptiles.
Some early reptiles that lived in the Mesozoic Era are actually thought to be dinosaurs by many people. A good example is the well-known Mosasaurus.
They lived during the Mesozoic Era, which can be broken down into three periods:
The end of the Triassic period was when dinosaurs first started to appear.
The Jurassic period occurred around 200 to 145 million years ago. This was when species such as the Stegosaurus and the Brontosaurus lived.
The Cretaceous period lasted from 145 to 65 million years ago. This was when the Tyrannosaurus rex and the Triceratops lived. Dinosaurs went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, though many scientists will argue that todays birds are dinosaurs.
Not all dinosaurs lived throughout the entirety of the Mesozoic Era. This means some species of dinosaur existed millions of years apart!
The dinosaurs lived everywhere in the world, but their world did not look like ours.
Since most kinds of dinosaurs were so massive, people question why they were wiped out so quickly?

What Are Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs are living creatures on our planet more than 150 million years ago. The name Dinosaurs means “terrible lizard” and has many meanings because they were big creature and scariest. They have a variety different of sizes from a chicken to others over weighing nearly 100 tons. Their diets are also very different, one of them being herbivores while others carnivorous and others an omnivore eats both plants and meat.
Scientists have not yet discovered how dinosaurs are extinct. Their fossils were first discovered in 1800. By studying these fossils, researchers know that dinosaurs are ancient cousins of some species like crocodiles, snakes, bird, and lizards today.
What Is A Dinosaur
Dinosaurs are prehistoric reptiles that have lived on Earth from about 245 million years ago to the present. Modern birds are one kind of dinosaur because they share a common ancestor with non-avian dinosaurs.
Non-avian dinosaurs , which are now extinct, varied greatly in shape and size. Some weighed as much as 80 tons and were more than 120 feet long. Others were the size of a chicken and weighed as little as 8 pounds. All non-avian dinosaurs lived on land. Some may have gone into the swamps and lakes for food, but they did not live entirely in water. Meat-eaters walked on two legs and hunted alone or in groups. Plant-eaters walked on either two or four legs and grazed on plants.
The feature that distinguishes dinosaurs from other reptiles is a hole in the hip socket, which allowed dinosaurs to walk upright. Pterosaurs, or flying reptiles, and plesiosaurs, ocean-dwelling reptiles, did not have this feature and were not dinosaurs.

Return Of The Dinosaurs
Once dinosaurs went extinct, they were forgotten for a long period of time. For hundreds and thousands of years, humans roamed the Earth without even realizing that the same lands had witnessed the rise and fall of creatures as majestic as the dinosaurs.
When it comes to the discovery of dinosaurs, Britain holds a special place. While dinosaurs roamed all around the world, it was in Britain where the fossils were discovered and properly studied by the scientists for the first time.
Around some 170 years back, the term dinosaur was coined by Richard Owen who was an expert animal anatomist of his time. However, it is believed that some geologists were already familiar with the animal that Owen described as dinosaurs
Nonetheless, his discoveries dawned new light on the prehistoric world of dinosaurs and piqued interest about them all over the world. Since then these colossal reptiles have managed to keep us captivated! Over the years, we have learned a lot about our favorite prehistoric animals.
Lets take a look at some of the most popular types of dinosaurs to learn a few interesting facts about them.
