Dioramas And Other Permanent Exhibits

The dioramas in the mammal halls have animals depicted in their habitats. The Hall of African Mammals has elephants and the Water Hole features giraffes, zebras and gazelles. There are an overwhelming number of animals, so for an overview, stick to birds, or small mammals or primates. My kids liked to see the familiar animals at The Hall of North American Mammals.

The Hall of Biodiversity has a giant walk-through diorama. You can see extinct animals, like a Dodo bird, and endangered ones like a Siberian tiger. Go back and see dioramas you skipped. And see the figures from Easter Island in the Margaret Mead Hall of Pacific Peoples, part of the Human Origins Hall.

Warburg Hall of New York State Environments is a one-story hall on the museums ground floor in between the Hall of North American Forests and the Grand Hall. Based on the town of Pine Plains and near-by Stissing Mountain in Dutchess County, the hall gives a multi-faceted presentation of the eco-systems typical of New York. Aspects covered include soil types, seasonal changes, and the impact of both humans and nonhuman animals on the environment. It is named for the German-American philanthropist, Felix M. Warburg. Originally known as the Hall of Man and Nature, Warburg Hall opened in 1951. It has changed little since and is now frequently regarded for its retro-modern styling. The hall shares many of the exhibit types featured throughout the museum as well as one display type, unique to Warburg, which features a recessed miniature diorama behind a foreground of species and specimens from the environment depicted.

American Museum Of Natural History New York Ny

The American Museum of Natural History in New York is one of the worlds great museums. There is so much to see and do at AMNH that I am convinced you can spend an entire week at the museum and still not see half of it. Fortunately if you focus on just a few collections, you can see some incredible things and feel like you saw everything you came to see in one or two days. For me, my focus is always on the dinosaurs and other prehistoric fossils. The AMNH collection is fantastic, spanning every time period and almost every dinosaur family, and some of the dinosaurs that are exhibited are truly iconic in paleontology.

HIGHLIGHTS

There are an awful lot of what can reasonably be called highlights at the AMNH. The wows start earlywhile in the ticket line in the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda, it is hard not to marvel at two wonderful dinosaurs engaged in an epic battle: a Barosaurus rears up to defend its young from an Allosaurus attack. The Barosaurus mount is the tallest dinosaur mount in the world, and the display is a real highlight.

Sanford Hall Of North American Birds

The Sanford Hall of North American birds is a one-story hall on the third floor of the museum, above the Hall of African Peoples and between the Hall of Primates and Akeley Halls second level. Its 25 dioramas depict birds from across North America in their native habitats. Opening in 1909, the dioramas in Sanford Hall were the first to be exhibited in the museum and are, at present, the oldest still on display. At the far end of the hall are two large murals by ornithologist and artist, Louis Agassiz Fuertes. In addition to the species listed below, the hall also has display cases devoted to large collections of warblers, owls, and raptors.

Conceived by museum ornithologist Frank Chapman, construction began on dioramas for the Hall of North American Birds as early as 1902. The Hall is named for Chapmans friend and amateur ornithologist Leonard C. Sanford, who partially funded the hall and also donated the entirety of his own bird specimen collection to the museum.

Whitney Memorial Hall Of Oceanic Birds

This particular hall has undergone a complicated history over the years since its founding in 1953. Frank Chapman and Leonard C. Sanford, originally museum volunteers, had gone forward with creation of a hall to feature birds of the Pacific islands. In the years up to its founding, the museum had engaged in various expeditions to Fiji, New Zealand, and the Marianas to collect birds for the exhibit. The hall was designed as a completely immersive collection of dioramas, including a circular display featuring birds-of-paradise. In 1998, The Butterfly Conservatory was installed inside the hall originally as a temporary exhibit, but as the popular demand of the exhibit increased, the Hall of Oceanic Birds has more or less remained closed by the museum.

Where To Eat At The Natural History Museum

The Museum Food Court, on the lower level, has the broadest choice. You walk around to different stations to collect your food, then pay to get to the seating area. There are always kid-friendly foods like pizza and burgers. And there are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options. That being said, it can get pretty expensive for a family.

If you want to bring your own food, you have to eat it in the student lunchroom, near the food court. This room is seemingly unchanged since I went to a New York City elementary school. I remember we dropped off our lunch boxes, toured the museum and returned for lunch.

The Natural History Museum has a cafe for a quick snack on the 4th floor, and one geared towards adult visitors on the first floor. This one has beer and wine.

In nice weather, you can eat in the park next to the Natural History Museum. Hold on to your tickets for re-entry.
