The Lost World: Jurassic Park is a 1997 American science fictionaction film. It is the second installment in the Jurassic Park franchise and the second film in the original Jurassic Park trilogy. A sequel to 1993’s Jurassic Park and loosely based on Michael Crichton‘s 1995 novel The Lost World, the film was directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by David Koepp. The film stars Jeff Goldblum, returning as the eccentric chaos theorist and mathematician Ian Malcolm, as well as , Pete Postlethwaite, Arliss Howard, Vince Vaughn, and Vanessa Lee Chester. Four years after the original film, John Hammond sends a team, led by Malcolm, to Isla Sorna, the second island Hammond’s company InGen used to make the dinosaurs, to study the animals while coming into conflict with a team led by InGen to bring some of the dinosaurs back to the United States.

    Sparing No Expense But Interest

    The Lost World: Jurassic Park

The Lost World being willed into existence purely by the first films runaway success isnt just true of the movie its also true of the novel the sequel is based on. Michael Crichton made no secret that he had little interest in writing a follow-up at first, saying the 1995 book was really something that came from the readers, but that it also came together because eventually there did seem to be the likelihood there would be another film and Steven seemed to have some interest in that. Between an adamant fanbase and looming specter of Hollywood, it looks from the outside like Crichton was essentially pressured into writing the novel. Only making things more odd is that The Lost World would end up being the lone sequel in Crichtons entire bibliography.

One Of Our Greatest Directors Weirdest Films

Released four years after its predecessor, 1997s The Lost World: Jurassic Park is possibly an even more bizarre sequel than it was originally given credit for. Of course, a sequel to the most successful film at the box office at that point in time was all but guaranteed, but it received mixed reviews and a significantly lower worldwide box office total . Even in 1997, The Lost World was known for being the kind of less-than follow-up to Jurassic Park that, as we discussed in the first part of this series, failed to materialize from any competitors.

Yet what makes The Lost World weirdly fascinating even all this time later is that, despite arguably being a misfire, it isnt an outright disaster. No, what makes it such an outlier is that its merely okay, which is exactly the sort of movie that truly great directors rarely make.

Jurassic Park And Jurassic World Movies In Chronological Order

There are no prequels yet, so the best way to watch the films is in the order of release. We have not included spin-offs like Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous as they have yet to have a major impact on the main storyline , but we did include the recently released short film, Battle at Big Rock, because it has serious implications for the Jurassic World storyline.

    1. Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park was released in 1993 and went on to become one of the highest-earning movies of all time. The film begins with the owner of Jurassic Park, John Hammond , recruiting a team of scientists and specialists to evaluate his new ambitious theme park, situated in the fictional island of Isla Nublar, to ensure that it is truly safe before it is officially opened to the public.

The team includes archaeologists Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler and mathematician Ian Malcolm . Jurassic Park won more than twenty awards, including three Oscars, and in 2018 the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Audience Reviews For The Lost World: Jurassic Park

    • May 28, 2022Coming off the heels of one of the greatest movies ever made, this movie could never follow up. But Spielberg tried, and for that I give him credit. The premise is interesting enough, and the dinosaur action is still strong as ever, but it’s held back by some truly idiotic actions from its characters and a final action sequence that, while fun, feels more like an epilogue than a true third act. There’s some great moments in this movie, it’s just not a great movie overall and feels a bit too long. That said, we still get dinosaurs chasing humans, and that will never get old to me.Michael MSuper Reviewer
    • Jun 07, 2016So many annoying characters in this one. The set pieces are constantly set-up, so that the heroes can stay alive. These two points alone kill this movie for me.Peter BSuper Reviewer
    • Feb 06, 2016Not a popular opinion, but I love this film. Sure it’s not as good as the first film and has a different tone but that’s what the film was going for. Steven Spielberg once again does a good job. Jeff Goldblum is again brilliant as Ian Malcolm and Julianne Moore is pretty good too, it has some thrilling scenes though it does have really dumb scenes ….. Nonetheless another good effort and enjoyable film!Mr NSuper Reviewer

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (8/10) Movie CLIP – Backyard Dino (1997) HD

This confluence of events that led to the novel and thus the films creation is readily apparent in the first 15 minutes of the movie. The sequels setup is slapdash at best: Oh, theres another island with dinosaurs? Oh, John Hammond has an plan to send a team there despite allegedly learning his lesson the first time around? Oh, Ian Malcolms girlfriend just so happens to have already left so he can be basically blackmailed into going on the mission? You can feel the creatives involved straining under the weight of obligation to manufacture a scenario to facilitate the dinosaur action that audiences craved. It brings to mind one of Malcolms most famous lines from the first movie: Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.

However, while the premise is flimsy by any reasonable measure, that doesnt mean you cant wring something worthwhile out of it. A sequel to Jurassic Park isnt an inherently doomed concept, like some hyperbolic fans would claim. Yet that persistent sense of obligation is what jeopardizes the whole enterprise, because it affects way more than just the first act.
