Naturally, the worlds foremost fossil museum comes first. Gilboa Fossil Forest And Gilboa Museum
Did you know that New York State has a petrified forest? The Gilboa Fossil Forest is the remains of a prehistoric Devonian period forest. There is a small outdoor exhibit of petrified wood fossils. These are the original Gilboa fossils. In 2008 the Gilboa Dam was under restoration when new fossils were discovered at the construction site including the remains of a Devonian forest floor. The Gilboa Museum has an extensive collection of fossils from the area. While the outdoor exhibit can be seen all year round, the museum is only open on weekends from Memorial Day until Columbus Day.

Dinosaurs Invade Long Island
Dinosaurs! is the new exhibit opening July 15 at the Center for Science Teaching and Learning in Hempstead, N.Y. Get up close and personal with more than 20 dinosaurs, including big animatronic beasts like Ankylosaurus and Stegosaurus. You can also meet live amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and dinosaurs direct descendants: birds, of course!
Are There Dinosaurs In New York
There are dinosaurs in New York, but not in the way you might think. New Art Installation Features Dinosaurs Running Wild On Park Avenue
NEW YORK — For more than 50 years, “Art in the Parks” has made New York City one of the country’s largest open air galleries, and a new installation is turning heads on Park Avenue.
“Rexor the T. rex” is just one of the oddly shaped animals dotting one of the ritziest avenues in the city.
“They’re like really nice to look at because everywhere you look, like, at a different angle, it changes the shape of it a little bit,” one woman said.
It’s an installation sponsored by the Patrons of Park Avenue, highlighting the work of French-Tunisian artist Idriss B.
“People walk by, they don’t even blink, right? Like this is normal. But I love it. We need that,” one man said.
“I already took three pictures to send to my daughter in San Francisco, you know, just to see what she’s missing,” another man said.
What she’s missing is everything from “Manny the Mammoth,” to “Dundee the Crocodile,” to the star of the show, Rexor.
“Well, you know, it’s for my nephew. He’s 5, so he thinks it’s amazing. I’m gonna tell him it’s chasing me down Park Avenue,” said one woman who was taking pictures.
It’s also adding to the culture-rich environment for true art aficionados.
“It’s like a metaphor for the vitality in the spirit, you know? You got your teeth bared. You’re ready to conquer the world,” one man said.
“That’s deep. I usually wouldn’t associated a T. rex with love. Especially one bearing in its teeth,” Overmyer said.

Penn Dixie Fossil Park
Penn Dixie was one of my familys favorite destinations on this list. This is a shale quarry in Buffalo that is just loaded with fossils from the Devonian period. You can keep whatever fossils you find. Our find was quite substantial when we visited. My entire family had a fantastic time searching for fossils. Penn Dixie is most famous for its trilobites. There are lots of other fossils to be discovered in the quarry such as brachiopods, corals, clams, gastropods, cephalopods, crinoids, and bryozoans.

Every American state has searched its soil for dinosaur fossils, but some states have more old dinosaur bones than others. Anyone lucky enough to stumble on some is likely to strike pay dirt: The worlds most complete T. rex skeleton fetched a record-setting $31.8 million in a 2020 auction.
To determine which states have the most dinosaur fossils, Stacker consulted the Paleobiology Database, a non-profit public resource that brings together fossil records from research institutions around the world. Data is current as of May 2022. We pulled all records labeled Dinosauria and sorted them by state. It is important to note that these records do not comprehensively reflect all dinosaur fossil records in the U.S., but rather represent a sample via the fossils available in public collections.

Paleontology In New York
Paleontology in New York refers to paleontological research occurring within or conducted by people from the U.S. state of New York. New York has a very rich fossilrecord, especially from the Devonian. However, a gap in this record spans most of the Mesozoic and early Cenozoic.
Much of New York was covered in seawater during the early part of the Paleozoic era. This sea came to be inhabited by invertebrates like brachiopods, conodonts, eurypterids, jellyfish, and trilobites. Local marine vertebrates included arthrodires, chimaeroids, lobe-finned fishes, and lungfish. By the Devonian the state was home to some of the oldest known forests.
The Carboniferous and Permian are missing from the local rock record. Little is known about Mesozoic New York, but during the early part of the era, carnivorous dinosaurs left behind footprints which later fossilized. The early to mid Cenozoic is also mostly absent from the local rock record. However, evidence indicates that during the Ice Age the state was worked over by glaciers, and home to creatures like giant beavers and mammoths.

Tips For Enjoying The World’s Largest Dinosaurs At The American Museum Of Natural History
- Get ’em pumped up in advance. No, I don’t mean the Memenchasaurus heart . I mean help your kids understand what they’re going to see, and get them excited about it. The night before we went into the exhibit we staged a little “Bring your Favorite Dino to Dinner” night. The type of dinosaur each child brought to the table decided what food he or she started with: salad for the herbivores, chicken for the meat eaters! We finished with dino cupcakes easy to make . and, you know, theyre cupcakes!
So my children were primed and ready for the following day’s special festivities
- Get there early! At the end of the school year, field trips abound as they do, I’m certain, in the summer. Try and beat the busloads of school- and camp kids. The museum opens at 10am according to one of the museum volunteers, the first tour through the exhibit at 10:30 is the quietest.
- Stay toward the back of the line. We went through the exhibit in a swarm, but it emptied out in about 15 min, when everyone was on line or in the dig. Had we been at the end of the entrance line, we would have had the luxury of lingering a bit longer on each segment.
- Have your children wear bright clothes, possibly matching colors. The Sauropod exhibit is dimly lit, and bright clothes help you spot a kid in the crowd.
- Pack lunch. The museum cafeteria has a wide range of options, many of them healthful, but the museum prices are Manhattan prices.
